Envision a fortress, a stronghold that encapsulates your thoughts—a sanctuary of tranquility and resilience. Picture this fortress as your "inner citadel," fortified and secure; see the towering walls, bastions, and dungeons safeguarding your inner peace.

Identify the distinct circles beyond the boundaries of your inner citadel. Each circle represents a realm of influence that you cannot control and from which you must free yourself.

The first circle encompasses interactions with others; their actions, their words, their judgements.

The second circle includes your past and future.

The third circle involves involuntary emotions, those reactions that arise without your conscious will.

And finally, the fourth circle which symbolizes the unfolding of events in the outside world.

The four circles represent the intricate dance of external influences beyond your control.

Reflect on Marcus Aurelius' words: "if you separate from yourself… all that troubles you… you will make yourself like the sphere of Empedocles, rounded, rejoicing in the solitude which is about it.". You will recognize that the key to serenity lies in detachment from external influences. Picture your mind liberated from the chains of necessity, purified and released, capable of acting justly, accepting what comes to pass, and speaking the truth.

Dive deep into understanding and internalizing the separation from others and their actions, past and future, involuntary emotional responses, and the tumultuous flow of external events.

Consider the concept of your guiding principle—the core of your will, behavior, mind, and values. Your guiding principle serves as the unyielding foundation from which you determine your strategy within the inner citadel.

From which you control your reactions to external events, those four circles.
