3. With everything that gives you pleasure, is useful to you, or that you are attached to, make a habit of saying to yourself—starting with the smallest things—“What is its nature?” If you are attached to a jug, say, “I am attached to a jug”; then, when it is broken, you will not be disturbed. If you kiss your own child or wife, say to yourself that you are kissing a human being; then, when it dies, you will not be disturbed.
