299. (The Babylonian Writings.) I have travelled more widely than any man of my time, pursued inquiries to the farthest reaches, seen the greatest variety of climates and lands, and listened to more learned men than anyone else. No one has surpassed me in composing reasoned treatises, not even the so-called rope-stretchers of Egypt; among them I spent eighty years living abroad.
