278. For human beings, having children is one of life’s necessities, arising from nature and ancient law. This is evident among animals as well: they reproduce by nature, not for profit, and they rear and care for their young, grieving if harm befalls them. For humans, however, it has become an established belief that some advantage should also come from offspring.
