253. It is not advantageous for good men to neglect their own affairs for other matters, for their private concerns suffer. But if someone neglects public affairs, he is spoken ill of, even if he commits no theft or injustice; and if he is negligent and does wrong, he not only gains a bad reputation but also risks bodily harm. Errors are inevitable, but forgiveness is hard to obtain.
