Everything begins with Reason (Logos), the living intelligence that shapes the universe and animates your mind. It manifests in Nature (Phusis), the vast, ordered whole of which you are a unique expression. To live in harmony with it, you can rely on your moral choice (Prohairesis), that inner capacity to guide your response, even in the face of the unexpected. This choice is rooted in your guiding principle (Hêgemonikon), the intimate center where your judgment takes shape. But that judgment already draws on preconceptions (Prolēpseis), general, often unconscious ideas that shape your perception even before the impression appears. It’s what helps you receive impressions (Phantasia) with discernment, those sudden appearances that arise without warning and try to steer your reaction. But impressions aren’t neutral: they trigger pre-cognitive emotions (Propatheiai), spontaneous surges, bodily or emotional reflexes you didn’t choose… but can learn to witness without getting swept away.
And that’s where your power of 8/ assent (Sunkatathesis) comes in — the pivotal moment where you decide whether to give weight to what your mind has just whispered.
In that space between impulse and response, you can cultivate serenity (Apatheia), not indifference, but a calm rooted in clarity. From that calm may arise freedom from disturbance (Ataraxia), a steady, lucid peace, unshaken by what lies beyond your control. And within that inner stillness, happiness (Eudaimonia) can finally flourish, a life that is upright, fertile, and deeply in tune with both yourself and the world.
